Meet Soma! He was rescued when he was 6 months old from a breeder who would sell puppies to the dog meat trade. Since then, he’s made his way to Canada and is living with a foster while he finds his forever home.
Soma is very smart, learns tricks very quickly, and listens very well. Currently, he knows how to “sit”, “lie down”, “paw”, “high 5”, “stay”, “wait”, “touch” (with his nose),”leave it”, “drop it”, “up” (and stand on his hind legs), “get in” (heel), “go crate” (to go lie down in his crate), and “upstairs”. He is very food motivated and loves to show off his tricks for treats. (see his video of him showing off his tricks)
He is very loyal and can be nervous with strangers. With some time and space, he warms up once he knows you are not a threat to him or his humans. He warms up especially quickly if you give him treats! He has been working on slow introductions with new people and has made great strides, although his adopter should be prepared to continue his training. Once he’s warmed up he’s cool as a cucumber and eager to please.
When Soma first arrived, he and his human were attacked by an off leash dog in the neighborhood on more than one occasion. This experience has left him nervous with other dogs, and he can be reactive when he sees other dogs on walks. However, he will calm down once his human is able to redirect his attention on something positive.
Soma has done incredibly well in improving his introductions with strangers and other dogs. Given his progress so far, as well as the ease in which he picks up new concepts, we know he will learn to feel more secure eventually. All he needs is patience.
This handsome, smart, and loyal boy will do best in a house with a yard in a quiet neighborhood with no kids or other pets. His ideal human(s) would be with an adopter with experience with dogs, and a calm and confident handler who’s leadership will give him confidence as well. They should be committed to continue to provide consistent training and socialization.
Soma is such a good boy who is so eager to please his humans. He is so deserving of a home.
